A Wild Time in Kenya

I’m looking into booking a safari holiday to Kenya. Home to some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes such as the plains of Meru National Park and the legendary Masai Mara, Kenya really does have it all.

Skiing at New Year

Nothing beats a snow-draped ski resort over Christmas and New Year for a winter holiday. It's time to strap on your skis or snowboard and head to the world's best ski resorts for New Year's Eve. Mr D names the five best resorts and why you should go.

I've spent plenty of festive holidays celebrating Christmas and New Year in hot, sunny southern hemisphere countries like Australia and South Africa. Sydney and the coast offer great adventure sports and country pursuits. Not to mention great bars and shopping opportunities for the stylish man about town.

And I've recently got back from Buenos Aires in Argentina after a 48-hour trip. Trust me, December sunshine is a good thing. Plus they really know how to party. But you have to admit, nothing beats a log-fire in a mountain cabin, hot drinks, hot food and...great friends. To enjoy all the indoorsy stuff, you need all the outdoorsy stuff too - snow, boots, mountain air. And, of course, après-ski - well-earned ski resort nightlife after an energetic day on the slopes.

So, New Year's Eve in the mountains - you're on board, right?

Five great ski resorts for New Year's Eve

It goes without saying that to ski or snowboard around New Year's Eve, you need snow, so at this time of year, that means the northern hemisphere. Resorts like Thredbo in Australia and Las Lenas in Argentina are great for the southern summer, but this time of year we're talking about the European Alps or the ski resorts of North America. And we're talking about only the best ones.

A man in the know heads to one of these great ski resorts:

  1. Aspen, Coloroda, USA - Leading US resort Aspen is part of a four-resort area, but Aspen itself is justifiably well-known. Glitzy with a stellar party scene, the runs aren't well-suited to beginners. Visit the official Aspen website.
  2. Whistler and Blackcomb, British Columbia, Canada - Spectacular scenery and some of the biggest and best runs in the world ensure you'll never get bored on the slopes, wrap up warm though - it's famously sun-shy. Visit the official Whistler and Blackcomb website.
  3. Chamonix, France - French wine, French mountain food, fondues and ooh la la - top-notch French hospitality that buzzes. Plus, you're super-close to the Italian ski resort of Courmayeur so you can go Italian too if you feel like it. Visit the official Chamonix website.
  4. Zermatt, Switzerland - Famously car-free, hard to get to but well worth it for the luxury resort when you get there. One of the longest ski seasons in the Alps so snow won't be a problem. Although with the stunning bars and restaurants your waistline might be. Visit the official Zermatt website.
  5. Val Thorens - part of the Three Valleys region, which also includes Courcheval and Meribel resorts, Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe. So there'll be snow. And lively nightlife. Visit the official Val Thorens website.

Other ski resorts worth considering:

Alpe D'Huez, Val D'Isere, Gstaad, Verbier, Lake Tahoe and Breckenridge I'd also highly recommended.

So there you have it - New Year's Eve in the mountains, hard work makes for hard play. Now all you need to decide is who to take with you.
